The Nature of Western Music Theory

Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 15, 2026

This policy explains what happens to your data when you visit or purchase Temperament, a product of Curran Crafts, operated by Matthew Curran (“we,” “us,” “our”).

The short version

Temperament collects almost nothing about you. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no forms anywhere in the App. The things that touch your data are cookieless analytics, your own browser's local storage, and, if you have a license, a periodic check-in with our licensing server — all described below. Payment information is handled entirely by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller, and never reaches us directly.

What we collect ourselves

Nothing identifying. Temperament has no login, no user accounts, and no tracking of who you are.

Analytics. We use two cookieless analytics services. Cloudflare Web Analytics tells us how many people visit and how quickly pages load. Umami tells us, in aggregate, which sections of the App are opened, which lessons are started, whether a Quiz answer was right and on which topic, whether an unlock succeeded, which Buy button was pressed, and when something in the App breaks, so we can see what students actually use and fix what's broken. Neither service sets cookies, neither requires a consent banner under current regulation, and neither builds a profile of individual visitors. Umami identifies a visit only by a short-lived, rotating hash that cannot be traced back to you; no license key, email address, or other identifying detail is ever sent to it. Both report aggregate figures only.

Local storage. To remember your place, such as the last panel you had open, your Quiz progress, or your Ear Training score and free-round count, Temperament stores a small amount of data directly in your own browser (via localStorage). If you have a license, your license key is stored the same way. This data is cleared if you clear your browser's site data, with one exception: see Licensing, below.

Licensing. Activating a license — whether by purchasing an Individual license or through a classroom access link — makes one request to our licensing server. A licensed device also checks back in with that server roughly once a day to confirm the license is still valid; if you're offline, nothing changes and the App keeps working. These requests carry the license key itself and, for a classroom link, a running activation count for that license. No student name, email address, or other identifier is ever sent or stored.

What Lemon Squeezy collects

If you purchase a license, your order is processed by Lemon Squeezy, acting as the Merchant of Record. Lemon Squeezy collects the information necessary to complete your purchase, such as your name, email address, and payment details, and handles that information under its own privacy notice, available at lemonsqueezy.com/privacy. We receive only what's needed to fulfill your order and provide support, such as your name, email, and which license you purchased.

Children's privacy

Temperament is built with university and conservatory-level students in mind and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated “last updated” date above.
